India, May 29 -- The value of the retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), or e?-Retail (e?-R), in circulation declined by 24.08% during FY26, according to the Reserve Bank of India's Annual Report.

The value of digital banknotes in circulation through the retail digital rupee stood at Rs 771.66 crore as of March 31, 2026, compared with Rs 1,016.46 crore a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the value of digital currency in circulation under the wholesale CBDC segment, e?-Wholesale (e?-W), remained at nil as of March 31, 2026, unchanged from the previous year.

The decline comes despite the RBI continuing to expand pilot use cases and test applications for the digital rupee across different user segments and transaction categories.
