India, May 19 -- Indian Railways has approved the 68-km Arakkonam–Chengalpattu doubling project under Southern Railway at a cost of Rs 993 crore to enhance capacity and efficiency on Chennai's suburban rail network.

The section is a key part of the Chennai suburban circular rail corridor connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam.

Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project will help ease congestion on the busy suburban network while improving punctuality and operational efficiency. He added that the upgraded infrastructure will support both passenger and freight movement, including transportation of cement, automobiles, food grains, iron and steel.
