India, May 13 -- The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a Rs 37,500 crore scheme aimed at promoting surface coal and lignite gasification projects to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imports of key fuels and chemicals.

The scheme is designed to accelerate India's target of gasifying 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030 and support domestic production of syngas and its downstream products. It is also expected to reduce reliance on imports of LNG, urea, ammonia and methanol.

Under the scheme, the government will provide financial incentives of up to 20 per cent of the plant and machinery cost for new coal and lignite gasification projects. The programme aims to facilitate gasification of ne...
