Pakistan, Nov. 5 -- Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic Assembly member, has been elected mayor of New York City, marking a historic victory for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Mamdani defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, becoming the first Muslim, first of South Asian heritage, and first African-born mayor in the city's history.

Mamdani's victory caps a meteoric rise for the young lawmaker and signals a shift toward progressive politics in America's largest city. He will also be New York's youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on January 1st.
