LAHORE, July 9 -- Local bodies elections in Pakistan have historically served as a training ground for future political leaders, with many individuals who began their careers at the grassroots level later emerging as influential figures in provincial and national politics.

Over the decades, several prominent politicians, including former Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, former Punjab Chief Ministers Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Dost Muhammad Khosa, former federal minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and Dr Farooq Sattar, started their political journeys through local government institutions before rising to higher offices.
