Pakistan, July 29 -- Indian sanitation workers' rights organisation Safai Karmachari Andolan has accused the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of underreporting the number of sanitation workers who died while cleaning sewers and septic tanks, alleging that hundreds of deaths were omitted from official figures presented to Parliament.

According to the organisation, 593 workers lost their lives between January 2021 and July 2026 while carrying out hazardous sewer and septic tank cleaning. However, it says the government informed Parliament that only 332 deaths had occurred during the same period, leaving a discrepancy of 261 fatalities.
