Pakistan, Sept. 1 -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to avoid leisure trips abroad and overseas weddings. He also asked people to avoid buying gold unless necessary. Modi linked the appeal to his broader goal of building a developed India.

In a video message on Tuesday, Modi called for greater spending discipline among citizens. He urged Indians to choose local destinations for holidays and weddings. He also advised people to postpone unnecessary gold purchases.

The appeal comes as India reports strong economic growth of 7.8 per cent. Modi had made a similar request in May during turmoil around the Strait of Hormuz. At that time, he also urged Indians to reduce fuel use, flights and gold purchases.
