Pakistan, July 25 -- Pakistan's government has promoted Lt. Gen. Aamer Raza to the rank of a four-star general and appointed him as the first commander of the National Strategic Command, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's office said on Friday.

The post of the commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC) was created under last year's 27th Constitutional Amendment, which made significant changes to the Pakistani military's chain of command. The CNSC is supposed to oversee Pakistan's nuclear assets, a role previously exercised by the now-defunct chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
