Pakistan, July 29 -- Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on Tuesday opposed the recently passed legislation in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly regarding local government institutions, expressing concerns that it could affect the schedule of local government elections in the province.
Addressing a press conference here at Peshawar Press Club, JI North Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief and former Jamaat-e-Islamisenior provincial minister Inayatullah Khan said his party rejected the legislation and demanded immediate measures for holding local government elections.
He said an effective local government system was essential for strengthening democracy and ensuring transfer of powers to the grassroots level.
