Pakistan, Aug. 21 -- Iran has warned of a "devastating" response to new US economic threats as Washington prepares tougher financial measures.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would impose the toughest financial penalties in history. He said the measures aim to pressure Iran's leadership.

Bessent made the comments Thursday after President Donald Trump warned countries against providing any lifeline to Iran. The Treasury chief said further details would come Monday.

Meanwhile, Iran's Armed Forces chief of staff, Major General Ali Abdollahi, warned that Tehran would respond decisively. Iranian media quoted him as saying the response would cover multiple domains.
