Pakistan, Aug. 16 -- A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, killing at least 51 people, injuring dozens and forcing around 5,000 residents to evacuate affected areas.

Authorities reported 36 people suffered serious injuries while another 77 sustained minor injuries, as the earthquake triggered landslides, blocked roads and damaged more than 1,300 homes.

The earthquake was followed by around 341 aftershocks, making it Indonesia's deadliest earthquake since the 2022 disaster in West Java that killed hundreds of people.

More than 3,300 people in Sikka either evacuated their homes or moved to a sports arena, while many others slept outdoors after fearing further collapses.
