Pakistan, Oct. 1 -- Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Managing Director, Rear Admiral Salman Ilyas has said that despite the capability to build indigenous ships of international quality, Pakistan's tax and business environment makes it easier to import a ship than to build one locally.

"The existing environment and duties are not conducive to the indigenous industry," he said while speaking at the World Maritime Day 2026 celebration in Karachi.

The event was organized by The Nautical Institute Pakistan Branch at a private hotel in Karachi under the theme "From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence." The 50th Anniversary of CILT Pakistan Branch was also celebrated on the occasion.
