Pakistan, July 20 -- Hamas announced on Monday that Khalil al-Hayya has been elected as the new head of its political bureau. Hayya previously served as the group's lead negotiator in indirect ceasefire talks with Israel. He succeeds Yahya al-Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces.

In a statement, Hamas said Hayya was elected to lead the movement's political bureau. The group described him as a senior figure with extensive experience. His appointment follows months of internal leadership changes after Sinwar's death.
