Pakistan, Aug. 1 -- By Friday morning, Sorange had ceased to be a rescue story. Thirty-two bodies had been recovered from two damaged coal mines near Quetta, while rescuers were still attempting to retrieve two miners trapped amid fire, methane and collapsed workings almost 4,000 feet underground. Mines Minister Mir Shoaib Nosherwani announced Rs500,000 for each bereaved family and an inquiry into the blast. The inquiry, however, carries a far greater burden: it must establish what the mine owner and provincial regulator knew about conditions inside a private coal mine before it became a recovery site. For the families of the 34 men who will never return, its findings will already be overdue and powerless to restore what the pit has taken...
