ALGIERS, Sept. 1 -- Algeria is preparing to restore the death penalty for people convicted of deliberate arson. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the legal change after deadly wildfires swept through northeastern areas. The fires have killed 12 people and injured more than 50 others. Six injured people remain in critical condition. The government plans to complete the proposed amendment by September 15, 2026.
