Pakistan, Sept. 22 -- Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot gave the long running horror series a huge start at the box office. The movie made around like $60 million in North America during its first three days in cinemas. That result was much higher than Sony's first estimate of $40 million.

Even the later estimate of $53 million to $55 million was lower than the final number. The strong start, however, has now given the new Resident Evil movie the biggest opening in the history of the series.

The previous record came from Resident Evil: Afterlife. It made $60.1 million in North America during its entire time in cinemas.

The new movie is also doing well outside North America as it made another $43.8 million from 62 countries.
