LINDI, Aug. 23 -- THE Tanzania has stressed the importance of protecting and developing the Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara Ruins, describing the site as an important part of the history of Africa and the world.

The remarks were made by Tanzanias Ambassador to France and Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Saidi Othman Yakubu, during his visit to the heritage site in Lindi Region, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Ambassador Yakubu said Kilwas heritage must be valued, protected and preserved for future generations, while acknowledging the contributions of the United States Government, the World Monuments Fund and the Government of France in supporting Tanzanias efforts to conserve and maintain the ruins.
