DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 27 -- THE government will today host a special ceremony in Dar es Salaam to honour and congratulate Tanzanian athletes who have excelled in various international sporting events.

Among those being recognised is Alphonce Simbu, who brought home a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships and triumphed in the Tokyo Marathon last week.

Simbu, a member of the Tanzania Peoples Defence Forces (TPDF), was on Thursday promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant in recognition of his exemplary achievements.

Dressed in full army uniform, he was officially decorated with his new rank by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Jacob Mkunda.
