DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 19 -- EXPANDING smartphone base is opening a larger market for digital businesses as rising device ownership and internet use accelerate demand for online services, fintech and digital commerce.

The number of smartphones in use rose 5.16 per cent to 31.34 million in the quarter ended June, from 29.8 million in the previous quarter, according to the latest Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authoritys sector performance report.

Smartphone penetration increased to 44.74 per cent from 42.50 per cent, indicating that almost half of the population now has access to a smartphone.
