TANGA, Feb. 16 -- FIVE people have died after being buried by debris at the Bolbit sand quarry located in Makuyuni Village, Korogwe District, in Tanga Region.

The accident occurred at around 5:30 p.m. on February 15, 2026, while the victims were carrying out sand mining activities in the area.

Confirming the incident, Tanga Regional Police Commander Almachius Mchunguzi said the cause of the accident was the collapse of soil embankments that gave way and fell onto the miners.

“A section of the soil collapsed and buried the five people who were digging, resulting in their deaths on the spot,” said Commander Mchunguzi.
