Sri Lanka, July 22 -- Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake told Parliament yesterday that Sri Lanka's total rooftop solar capacity reached roughly 1,700 MW by mid-2025, up from about 867 MW in 2024. This rapid expansion adding hundreds of megawatts within a year successfully refuted political allegations that solar installations were being discouraged during NPP tenure.

Sri Lanka is implementing a comprehensive Renewable Energy Resources Development Plan under the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority.

This targets 70% of electricity generation from renewables by 2030, supported by unbundled utility services via the new Electricity Act and expanded national energy storage networks.
