Sri Lanka, Dec. 18 -- Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged torture of a wild elephant that was set on fire in Seeppukulam, within the Mihinthale Police Division, police said.
The arrests were made by Mihinthale Police following an extensive investigation prompted by a video that circulated widely on social media, showing a wild elephant being deliberately set ablaze. The suspects, aged 42, 48 and 50, are residents of the Seeppukulam area.
The injured elephant was later found dead in Seeppukulam. According to police, a post-mortem examination revealed that the animal's death was caused by kidney and liver disease, compounded by extreme stress and fear resulting from burn injuries.
