Sri Lanka, Sept. 20 -- The maximum amount of Rs.600,000 paid in the event of a death of a Sri Lankan migrant worker in an accident while on the job as compensation currently, has been raised to Rs.2 million.
Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Chairman Koshala Wickremasinghe said that the compensation paid to the dependents of any Sri Lankan who has registered with the SLBFE and working abroad, has been increased.
He also noted that as of the end of August, foreign employment provided a remittance income of US$ 5.2 billion to the country.
He said that over 220,000 Sri Lankans secured overseas employment so far this year, with an optimistic projection for remittances to reach USD 7 billion by year-end 2025.
