Sri Lanka, Feb. 6 -- he Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Jagath Wickramanayake, announced today (06) that the Supreme Court has cleared the "Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal)" Bill, confirming that it is consistent with the Constitution of Sri Lanka.Sri Lanka travel guide
The Bill, challenged in the Supreme Court under Article 121(1) of the Constitution, proposes to abolish the pension entitlements currently granted to Members of Parliament and their spouses under the Parliamentary Pensions Law, No. 1 of 1977.
The Supreme Court ruled that the Bill does not contradict any provision of the Constitution. As a result, it can now be passed in Parliament with a simple majority of members present and voting.
