Sri Lanka, Aug. 12 -- The Government has approved a Rs.635 million project to construct a rehabilitation centre in Kekirawa for individuals referred by courts for drug-related offences under community-based rehabilitation orders.

Under the Community Based Corrections Act No. 46 of 1999, Tourist Courts and Magistrates' Courts are empowered to issue community-based correction orders for minor offenders. A majority of those directed to these programmes have been convicted of drug- or alcohol-related offences, with the initiative aimed at helping them overcome addiction and successfully reintegrate into society as productive citizens.
