Sri Lanka, Oct. 28 -- The Cabinet of Ministers approved payment of special compensation and relief to prison officers who were killed or injured on duty during clashes at the Negombo Prison on July 5 and 6, 2026, Cabinet Spokesman and Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing yesterday (27), the minister said that during the cabinet meeting on August 3, 2026, the Cabinet had decided to appoint a committee headed by the Justice and National Integration Ministry Secretary to make recommendations on the matter.

The committee has since submitted its report, which was presented to the Cabinet, and approval was granted to implement its recommendations.
