Sri Lanka, Feb. 25 -- US$ 4 million has been allocated to mitigate the Human Elephant Conflict (HEC) along the 95.8 kilometers North Central Canal running from Moragahakanda reservoir to Mahakanadarawa reservoir in Anuradhapura District.
"We have taken action to have 75 elephants fitted with radio collars as an initiative to study and monitor their movement patterns helping authorities make better informed management decisions. Not only that further to protect farming communities around 160 km of electric fences have been already established around paddy fields in the MWSIP areas for the purpose of reducing huge crop damage while ensuring safer movement corridors for all sorts of wildlife," Project Director Nihal Siriwardana said.
