Sri Lanka, Aug. 21 -- Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath informed Parliament today (22) that the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) will be repealed, with a Gazette notification expected to be issued in early September.

The announcement comes after a committee was appointed shortly after the government assumed office to study the PTA and recommend necessary amendments. The committee has met several times and has begun finalizing changes to the law, which will be completed by the end of August. Following this, the PTA will be formally repealed and replaced with new legislation aimed at addressing organized crime and drug-related offenses while maintaining national security.
