Sri Lanka, Jan. 16 -- The inaugural ceremony of the National Housing Programme 2026 will commence this morning (January 16) in Meesalai, Chavakachcheri, Jaffna, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The programme aims to address the country's long-standing housing needs by constructing 31,218 new houses across Sri Lanka within this year. The initiative is being implemented under the theme "A Place to belong, a Beautiful Life."

Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, stated that special priority will be given to vulnerable communities, including 2,500 families in the Northern and Eastern provinces who remain without permanent housing due to the impacts of the war.
