Sri Lanka, June 24 -- Transport and Highways Deputy Minister Dr.Prasanna Gunasena told Parliament yesterday that Sri Lanka is set to begin a phased electrification of its suburban railway network starting in 2027 to ease commuter congestion.

The multi-stage project features major expansions, including adding extra tracks, converting to standard gauge, and modernising major corridors into an interconnected electric loop.The Colombo Suburban Railway Project outlines several key expansions and route upgrades to accommodate these modern electric trains.

Colombo to Ragama line (Main Line) is curently the double line and it will be expanded to four lines, with the fourth line dedicated to the new electrified services.
