Sri Lanka, July 22 -- Three people in Sri Lanka die every day from mouth cancer.
Deputy Director General (Dental Services), Specialist Dr Chandana Gajanayake said it has been scientifically confirmed that the use of areca nut and tobacco are primary factors for oral cancer.
He said these lives can be saved by stopping the habit of consuming tobacco and areca nut with betel leaves. He emphasised the support of the Maha Sangha, led by the Mahanayake Theras, is vital for this purpose.
Gajanayake made these observations yesterday (21) after calling on the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter, the venerable Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, and the Anunayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Venerable Narampanawe Ananda Thera.
