Sri Lanka, July 29 -- Cabinet Spokesman and Health and Mass Media Minister Dr.Nalinda Jayatissa said there is no need for a referendum to implement the Government's decision to extend judges' retirement ages, as the proposed constitutional amendment does not affect any provisions requiring referendum approval.

He made these remarks during yesterday's (28) weekly Cabinet press briefing at the Department of Government Information.

Dr.Jayatissa said the 1978 Constitution identifies the provisions that require both a two-thirds parliamentary majority and a referendum. He noted that increasing judges' retirement age or expanding the number of judges in the superior Courts is not among them. Therefore, a referendum is not required.
