Sri Lanka, June 4 -- Transport and Highways Deputy Minister Dr. Prasanna Gunasena stated that there was a pricing formula to determine bus fare hikes based on the percentage of fuel price increases, and that, according to this formula, there was no need to raise bus fares at this time.
Resorting to strikes over fares at this juncture was therefore unjustified, and, except for a few individuals who failed to understand this, the majority of bus owners would operate their vehicles as scheduled, he noted.
Speaking to the media following an event in Kundasale, Dr.Gunasena further explained that one or two bus owners might claim they were withdrawing their vehicles from service to demand a fare hike due to increased fuel prices.
