Sri Lanka, March 16 -- The Northern Naval Command conducted an awareness programme and discussion on March 10 at the SLNS Uttara, to address pressing fishing-related issues in the Northern Province.
This programme which builds upon previous efforts of a similar nature, was led by the Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Buddhika Liyanagamage.
The discussion focused on challenges faced by fishermen, illegal fishing practices, smuggling, regulatory matters, and the importance of sustainable fishing to protect marine resources. Participants emphasised the need for close co-operation among the Navy, Coast Guard, Police, Fisheries Department, and fishing societies to ensure a safe and productive fishing environment.
