Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed the operation, noting it was carried out outside Sri Lanka's territorial waters in line with international obligations.

The Sri Lanka Navy has launched a rescue mission after an Iranian vessel met with an accident about 40 nautical miles off the Port of Galle.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Navy teams were deployed to the area to assist those on board and transport them safely to shore.
