Sri Lanka, July 25 -- Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday said alleged the Government's move to bring an amendment to extend the retirement age of Apex Court judges will deny the people of their judicial power.

Speaking at a meeting with the leaders of Opposition political parties, the former president was of the view that an amendment to the constitution, extending the retirement age of Apex Court judges can only be done through a referendum.

He asked who is to hear the cases if such constitutional amendment is challenged in Court.The former President argued that basic principle in law is that judges cannot sit on a case if they are personally benefitted as law requires fairness and impartiality.
