Sri Lanka, Sept. 23 -- The Supreme Court has sentenced Immigration and Emigration Controller Harsha Illukpitiya to two years in prison for contempt of court.
The judgment was delivered by Supreme Court Judge Yasantha Kodagoda, with the concurrence of Justices Janak de Silva and Arjuna Obeysekara. The bench stated that Illukpitiya's actions constituted serious contempt of court.
The case stems from the Supreme Court's interim injunction directing the Immigration and Emigration Department to reinstate the previous visa issuance system. The injunction had been issued to prevent the implementation of a Cabinet decision from the previous government that sought to transfer the e-visa issuance process to two private companies.
