Sri Lanka, Aug. 17 -- Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya says a more systematic and sophisticated program is being implemented to suppress underworld activities and drug trafficking, going beyond the existing framework.

Speaking to the media after meeting the Mahanayake Theros in Kandy today (17), the IGP emphasized the importance of collaboration with the tri-forces and the public to effectively combat crime.

He also revealed that certain underworld operations and the drug trade have historically received political blessings and even support from some law enforcement officers, but assured that under the current political environment there is no interference in enforcing the law.
