Healthy School Canteen Guideline launched today
Sri Lanka, June 22 -- According to a survey conducted by the Health Promotion Bureau, 12 percent of schoolchildren in the country between the ages of 13 and 14 are reported to be overweight, while three percent suffer from obesity.
The survey also reveals that 17.4 percent of children drink carbonated sugary beverages daily, 28.5 percent are addicted to foods high in salt and oil, and 41 percent of children are habituated to consuming unhealthy sugary foods at least once or more times a day.
Doctors state that due to the daily consumption of ultra-processed, high-calorie foods devoid of nutritional value, adults as well as children are falling victim to deadly diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer.
