Sri Lanka, Sept. 23 -- The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken custody of more than 6,000 gold jewellery items, weighing a total of 80 kilograms, discovered in the illegal LTTE banks during the Humanitarian Operation in the Northern Province. The gold, which had been in the custody of the Sri Lanka Army, is now being stored in the vaults of the Central Bank (CB).
The CID informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama yesterday that the items were first handed over to the National Gem and Jewellery Authority for valuation and weighing before being securely transferred to the CB. The CID noted that 172 items were handed over yesterday.
