Sri Lanka, Aug. 21 -- Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested today (22) after he arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide a statement.
Sources said the investigation focuses on a trip he made to the United Kingdom to attend a university graduation ceremony in London. It is alleged that the visit, which included ten accompanying individuals, was a personal trip funded by the state. The total amount of state funds used has been estimated at approximately Rs. 17 million.
Wickremesinghe becomes the first former Sri Lankan President to be arrested.
