Sri Lanka, May 15 -- The Supreme Court has sentenced former National Institute of Education (NIE)Director I.G.S. Premathilaka to six years of rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty of contempt of Court for failing to implement a Supreme Court order relating to the 2024 Grade 5 Scholarship Examination.

The verdict was delivered by a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena.

In addition to the prison sentence, the Court imposed a fine of Rs.3 million on Premathilaka.Court further ordered that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional one-year prison term.
