Sri Lanka, Oct. 15 -- A consignment of foreign cigarettes worth approximately Rs. 852 million, seized by Customs while attempts were being made to illegally import them into the country, was destroyed at the Muthurajawela Power Plant yesterday (14).

Customs Spokesperson Chandana Punchihewa said that 5.5 million counterfeit cigarettes manufactured in a foreign country, seized by the Customs Revenue Supervision Division officers in 2023, were destroyed in this manner.

Punchihewa also stated that this consignment of cigarettes had been imported by submitting false information to Customs to re-export it from Cambodia via Sri Lanka to Somalia.
