Sri Lanka, Aug. 14 -- The El Nino phenomenon currently developing over the island is likely to strengthen into a strong phase by November, December and January, with its effects expected to continue until around April 2027, the Meteorology Department said yesterday.

The Department's Forecasting Division Director Meril Mendis said the maximum impact of El Nino this year is yet to be seen, and its development can be observed over the course of August. However, he noted there is more than 80 percent probability that the effect will intensify to a strong level in the coming months.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Monsoon remains active across the island, though the overall rainy weather is expected to gradually ease in the coming days.
