Sri Lanka, Aug. 6 -- The motion to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandhu Tennakoon has been officially passed in Parliament and forwarded to the President by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.
During the vote held on August 5, a total of 177 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the motion. No votes were cast against it, although one MP abstained from voting.
The motion was passed under Section 17 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act, No. 5 of 2002, requiring a majority of the total number of MPs, including those absent. With 177 affirmative votes, the motion met the constitutional threshold.
The final decision now rests with the President, who has the authority to act on the recommendation sent by the Speaker.
