Death penalty against church teaching, says Cardinal
Sri Lanka, Aug. 11 -- Capital punishment goes against the teachings of the Catholic Church even for those responsible for the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said yesterday (10), as he renewed calls for justice and accountability for the Easter attacks.
In a press release, the Cardinal cited paragraph 2267 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which holds that the death penalty is "inadmissible because it violates human dignity."
"We do not agree on any imposition of the death penalty in the context of this teaching of the Church," the statement said.
The Cardinal said the Archdiocese remains in "total solidarity" with the victims and is committed to identifying the mastermind or mastermin...
