Sri Lanka, Nov. 18 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the submission of the Parliamentary Pensions Law (Repeal) Draft Bill to Parliament for consideration and approval. This move is aimed at abolishing the pension entitlements currently granted to elected members of Parliament and their spouses.

The decision follows in-principle approval granted by the Cabinet on 16 June 2025 to repeal the Parliamentary Pensions Law, No. 1 of 1977, which has provided pension benefits to Members of Parliament since its enactment.

In line with the government's policy vision "Pohosath Ratak - Lassana Jeewithayak" (A wealthy country - a beautiful life), the Legal Draftsman prepared the draft bill to formally cancel parliamentary pension entitlements. ...
