Sri Lanka, July 30 -- The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has declared that any decision to extend the retirement age of judges must ultimately rest with the people, urging the Government to hold a referendum rather than act alone.

Speaking to the media after a Special General Meeting held at BASL headquarters in Colombo yesterday (29), BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya said around 3,000 members, joining both physically and virtually, unanimously passed a resolution objecting to the Government's proposal.

He said the legal profession represents the voice of the judiciary, and warned that the move carries a serious threat to judicial independence.
