Avindu and Nipun make history with Sri Lanka's first FISU medals
SriLanka, Sept. 10 -- Sri Lanka has made a remarkable start to the 2026 FISU World University Weightlifting Championships in Doha, Qatar, with Avindu Liyanagedara of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura winning gold in the men's 60kg category and Nipun Dissanayake of Sabaragamuwa University claiming bronze in the men's 65kg category.
The medals mark a historic milestone for Sri Lanka, as they are believed to be the country's first at the World University Championships or Games in their more than 60-year history.
Liyanagedara produced a commanding performance in the 60kg division, lifting 105kg in the snatch before following it with an impressive 132kg in the clean and jerk. His combined total of 237kg secured him the overall gold medal...
