Sri Lanka, April 29 -- Despite the high literacy rate in the country, around 25 percent of children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition and as a result, one-fourth of school-going children are unable to reach their expected educational targets, a Community Health Specialist at the Central Province Health Department Dr. Suranga Fernando said.

He noted that regardless of how high the quality of education provided is, it is difficult to elevate this group due to cognitive deficiencies caused by malnutrition.

He stressed that this situation must be correctly understood and necessary remedies should be implemented.
